Jones covered on Nashville Star

Mike Sudhalter  |  June 17, 2008

You've got to give Shawn Mayer credit for tackling a classic, the George Jones' hit "He Stopped Loving Her Today" on Nashville Star Monday night.

Miller wooed the audience, but not the judges, with her version, a unique and emotional spin on what is arguably the greatest country song of all time.

Of course, the song is sacred. But it's been 28 years since its initial release, and it's about time that artists start covering it and putting their unique stamp on it.

Would Star judge John Rich rather watch contestants sing pop-country? Probably so.

Toby Keith knows a thing or two about scouting and signing talent. On his Show Dog label, he's got an eclectic mix of artists - the cross-genre talents of Trailer Choir, the harmonies of all-girl band Carter's Chord and powerhouse vocalist Mica Roberts, whom Keith duets with on "Things A Mama Don't Know."

All three have a bright future ahead of them, and a sampler of their recordings now is available on itunes, as is Chords' debut album.

Guess who released a pop-sounding album? That's right, Rebecca Lynn Howard. She sounds more like Tina Turner than Patty Loveless on her latest effort.
