Road to Nowhere

Mike Sudhalter  |  January 19, 2009

I thought I'd come across such a great day - take a road trip to Austin and Central Texas for the day. No plans, just the open road and a whole lot of country music.

Sounds like a great idea if it were a fictional book, movie or a song. I wanted to clear my mind and get out of my every day routine.

I learned two things from the trip - don't ever leave for a road trip at Noon, if you're planning to come back that night. And two, always have a destination and plans in mind.

We all work too hard -myself included - to wander aimlessly with no plans in mind. It's definitely one of those things that sounds a whole lot better in theory, than in practice.

One thing I will say, is that it's enjoyable to listen to the different country stations throughout the small towns.

Unlike the city, there are stations in the smaller towns that consistently play Texas Music along with the mainstream fare of the day. My favorite among them is KTEX 106 out of Brenham, Texas.

The station is having a Country-Palooza show this Saturday with the likes of Granger Smith and Maren Morris.

Now, that might just give me the reason I need to head west on U.S. Hwy. 290.
