Loving County

Mike Sudhalter  |  June 4, 2009

Loving County is one of the least populated counties in Texas, but also the setting for a tale of romance and crime in a song by Charlie Robison. I really enjoy story songs and this is one of them.

Loving County is in West Texas near Pecos and Odessa and is mostly a place for oil fields. So, people work there, but few reside within its borders.

I wonder what the Broadway production of "Pure County" will be like. Joe Nichols is going to play the role of Dusty Wyatt Chandler, the country singer who returns home to his Texas roots. It's going to be interesting to see if they adapt the plot or if it's very similar to the movie. The plot of the original movie was OK, but the music was real good (you can't go wrong with George Strait).

Speaking of which, I'm looking forward to seeing the legend in concert. He'll open the New Dallas Cowboys in style. So, he closed one legendary stadium (The Astrodome) and will open another one. I'd seen him play another football stadium (Arrowhead in Kansas City) and two arenas (Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif. and The Centrum in Worcester, Mass.)

The Worcester show in 1996 was actually my first-ever country concert. It's funny that I still have the T-Shirt from that show 13 years ago. I remember how cool it was seeing him, and the opening act - Steve Wariner.
