Casey Donahew rocks Sam Houston Race Park

The Casey Donahew Band wrapped up an evening of sports and country music at the Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, Texas

A lot of country singers enjoy performing rock or pop cover songs, but few of them do it as well as Casey Donahew Band.

Donahew showed his talents and versatility on Matchbox 20's "3 A.M." and the Black Crowes' "Hard to Handle."

But the Fort Worth area native is proud of his Texas roots and shows it on nearly every song, from the classic, "Stockyards," about the beloved historic district in his hometown, to "Back Home In Texas," where we find out that other places are fun, but just can't match the Lone Star State.

A song off the new album is "One Star Flag," which Donahew said was inspired by watching the movie, "Urban Cowboy." That makes sense, since the song has a Charlie Daniels/Mickey Gilley type of sound.

Horse racing is fun, but there's nothing like country music, especially a high-energy concert such as Casey Donahew.

He did a great job of mixing the old songs with the new ones, and he was very honest with the fans, saying that he doesn't do encores, but told them which songs were part of what would have been the encore.

He said leaving the stage, only to return, is a bunch of unneccessary drama.

True. But when will the rest of the music industry get the memo?
