Like A Rose highlights Ashley Monroe as a solo artist

Mike Sudhalter  |  March 10, 2013

You probably know her as a member of the Pistol Annies trio, but Ashley Monroe is quite the impressive artist on her own.

Ashley Monroe is one of the best kept secrets in Nashville, and her sophomore album, "Like A Rose," came out last week.

The title track talks about overcoming problems, and leaving North Dakota. When's the last time a country singer mentioned North Dakota in a tune?

Her voice is inviting and reminiscent of a time gone by in country music.

"Two Weeks Late" is a really cool song that talks about mounting challenges. It's a play on the "dollar short and a day late."

It has that classic song, but some of Monroe's tunes seem more contemporary, like "Used," which really highlights her beautiful voice.

"Monroe Suede" might be the best song on the album - a tune of being on the run. I'm surprised it wasn't on the Pistol Annie's list for album No. 2.
