Del McCoury Band & Woody Guthrie...Finally

Donald Teplyske  |  February 20, 2016

The release date for the long-anticipated Del McCoury Band album featuring fresh bluegrass interpretations of previously unreleased lyrics written by Woody Guthrie has been set for April 15, 2016.

Coming out on McCoury Music, "Del and Woody" has been talked about for several years, originating out of the desire of Woody's daughter Nora to have Del craft music and melodies for lyrics held within the extensive Woody Guthrie archives.

Many listeners first caught wind of the possibility of this album a few years ago when Del and the boys performed at a Kennedy Center event; subsequently, two songs-"So Long, It's Been Good to Know Yuh" and "Woody's Rag"-were released on the accompanying release, "Woody Guthrie at 100! Live at the Kennedy Centre." The group's recording of "The New York Trains" (which appears on "Del and Woody") was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best American Roots Song two years ago; the track appeared on the set "My Name is New York: Ramblin' Around Woody Guthrie's Town."

The band has also occasionally dropped a Guthrie song into their live sets.

Not being able to track down the press release for this album, I don't have many details to offer although quotes from those involved have been published elsewhere. But one thing is clear:new music from the Del McCoury Band is always welcome news, and to finally hear an album that has been so anticipated will hopefully be doubly satisfying.

The Del McCoury Band's track record for excellence pert much guarantees it.

UPDATE: March 6- I've received the album via download, thanks to the publicity team. A highlight of the bluegrass year is not an overstatement: a full review to follow, but certainly a strong, complex, and pure bluegrass experience it is.
