The SteelDrivers put more blues in my bluegrass

Jessica Phillips  |  October 21, 2009

Since first attending an album release event for bluegrass group The SteelDrivers, I loved their bluesy, soulful version of bluegrass music. I've been lucky enough to see them at places like the Ryman Auditorium and Station Inn. Lead singer Chris Stapleton could sing the paint off a house, and they have some beautifully dramatic and somber tunes to match.

I'm glad to see that this group of ace musicians and singers are finally garnering some recognition. In 2008, the group was nominated for a Grammy, but never took one home. Now in 2009, the tide seems to be turning. They won Emerging Artist of the Year at the IBMAs earlier this month, and won the Nashville Music Awards' Bluegrass Album of the Year.

The SteelDrivers' website says they will hit the studio in February to record a new album. I hope it will open more doors for this talented group.
