The Essential Gary Stewart (RCA, 1997)

Gary Stewart

Reviewed by Larry Stephens

Stewart may have disappeared from the national charts, but he still owns a piece of the honky-tonk history that appeared in the early '70's.

With his quavering voice and straight country sound behind him not many will mistake his music for anything but honky-tonk country. This compilation of hits (and some misses) drags you back in time. You start checking your boots for some sawdust while your hips sway to the beat. You'll recognize "Drinkin' Thing" and "She's Actin' Single." But don't miss the sweet melody of "Whiskey Trip." The only down side to this album is the reminder that he's lived the life he sings about and more, just like George Jones and too many others. But, it just doesn't get much better than this for country fans.
