Wildfires + Misfires: Two Decades Of Outtakes And Rarities (Yep Roc, 2002)

Jason & the Scorchers

Reviewed by Brian Steinberg

Fans of the Jason & The Scorchers - the band that dared to mix country music with Led Zeppelinesque guitar pyrotechnics and sonic drum booms - will thrill to the release of this disc.

Contained within: top-quality demos of "hits" like the Scorchers' definitive take on Bob Dylan's "Absolutely Sweet Marie"; live takes on the oft-covered "Long Black Veil," "Lost Highway" and "Polk Salad Annie"; inclusions of "never-heards" like "Bone" and "Break Open The Sky" and different versions of tunes such as "Cappuccion Rosie."

As always, Jason Ringenberg and crew - including underrated guitar wizard Warner Hodges - mix cornpone and cowpunk in revitalizing fashion. A must-have for fanatics, and new Scorchers selections for those who have yearned for just one more tour.
