Behind The Midway (Flat Earth, 2000)

Jason Wilber

Reviewed by Philip Bernhardt

Jason Wilber has played lead guitar for some notables - John Prine, Iris Dement and Hal Ketchum. However, his latest is proof that his true talent is not his colorful guitar playing, but rather his insightful songwriting and soothing vocals. This eclectic 11-song hodgepodge showcases Wilber's ability to blend his own pop, country and folk sensibilities to the mix, resulting in a unique sample of Americana music.

The Townes Van Zandt-influenced "Lay Down When Your Done" kicks the CD off in fine fashion highlighting Wilber's exceptional vocals and guitar playing. "You're The Only One" is a delightfully written love song that brings memories of an old girlfriend. There are very few country songwriters that write quality trucker songs anymore. With "Over the Road," Wilber somehow pulls it of with both grace and style. The highlight is Wilber's inspired duet with Prine on "The Galway Waltz," a testament to brilliance created when the energy of two amazing musicians is brought together. With his second release, Wilber has solidified himself as an outstanding songwriter and musician. (Box 5881 Bloomington, IN, 47407, E-Mail: WilberNews@aol.com)
