Memories of Foggy Mountain (OMS, 2002)
Josh Graves
Reviewed by George Hauenstein
"Uncle" Josh Graves introduced the dobro to bluegrass during his tenure with Flatt and Scruggs in the 1950s. Graves and the Foggy Mountain Boys wrote and recorded some of the greatest instrumentals of all-time and helped to set a new course for bluegrass.
This is a very appropriately titled recording as Graves and company reprise many of these instrumentals, including "Shuckin' The Corn," "Foggy Mountain Special," "Foggy Mountain Rock," "Maggie Blues," "Flatt Lonesome," "Pike County Breakdown" and "Maiden's Prayer." These songs have all gone on to become bluegrass standards, performed and recorded by countless bands over the years. Here they are presented in the original style.
Graves is backed by a stellar cast, including J.D. Crowe on banjo, Bobby Hicks on fiddle and Aubrey Haynie on fiddle and mandolin. There are not a lot of surprises here, just 'straight ahead' renditions of classic bluegrass tunes that are always worth another listen.
