Smokin' the Dummy/ Bloodlines (Sugar Hill, 1997)

Terry Allen

Reviewed by Roy Kasten

These two early '80s releases oBoth discs, separated by only three years, are a portrait of American brutality, from colonialism to market culture run rampant. The standouts include "The Heart of California," "Helena Montana," "Bloodlines," "Ourland," and the oft-covered "Gimme a Ride to Heaven Boy." Allen's band, featuring some all star Texas pickers, is angry and relentless in its delivery, and help make these two discs the important documents they remain.
