Treasures Left Behind: Remembering Kate Wolf (Red House, 1998)

Various Artists

Reviewed by Mark "Brink" Brinkman

Fourteen artists contribute their talent to this project including Kathy Mattea, Lucinda Williams, Utah Phillips, Nanci Griffith, and Greg Brown. But the real stars are the songs themselves. Wolf had the treasured ability to paint songs with words. Songs like "Carolina Pines" and "Here in California" transport the listener. From the upbeat tune "Like a River," performed by Peter Rowan, to the hauntingly beautiful rendition of "Love Still Remains," sung by Emmylou Harris, the melodies compliment the words seamlessly. The artists' love and respect for Wolf is evident in both the comments that accompany each song in the liner notes as well as their performance.
