Inspirational Journey (Warner, 2000)

Randy Travis

Reviewed by Jeffrey B. Remz

It's the voice that matters most of all with Randy Travis. So, whether he's singing country or in this case, faith-based songs couched in country, doesn't really matter. That does not mean Travis glides through the 12 songs here with little care or concern for the material. Far from it.

Travis sings in his usual easy going style right from the get go of "Shallow Water" - he kind of keeps going with the effect building on the listener over time. The closing "Amazing Grace," the only well-known song here at all, is rendered effective by Travis alone on acoustic guitar. Just the man and his voice. The message is more about matters of faith and choosing the "right path," making it more accessible than typical gospel fare. "Which Way Will You Choose? points out the idea.

Good thing Kyle Lehning was back producing because he knows a winning voice when he has it. The music may be inspirational, causing the listener to think about making choices, but even the non-believer must say amen to the quality of Travis' singing.
