Still Restless (Koch, 2004)

Restless Heart

Reviewed by Kevin Oliver

Picking up where they left off a decade or so ago, this new album from the original lineup of Restless Heart is just about what one would expect. Their vocal harmonies, always the band's strongest asset on classics like, "Bluest Eyes In Texas," are as tight and tuneful as ever, and the song selection is a mixture of ballads and upbeat country-rockers.

As always, the band members take turns on lead vocals, though their voices are more or less interchangeable - a plus for the harmonies, but a problem when trying to figure out who's singing what without specifics in the liner notes. Auxiliary member and noted songwriter Mac McAnally gets a "Best Supporting Player" award, not only for his instrumental and production duties, but for talking the band into recording two of his best songs, "Looking Back" and "Miracle."

They'll probably never scale the charts again like they did the first time around, but for a reunion album this sure doesn't sound like they ever broke up in the first place.
