Shakin' Apostles

Reviewed by Jeffrey B. Remz

In a rarity of rarities for country, the band, anchored by guitarist Freddie Steady Krc, of Jerry Jeff Walker's band, offer a concept album. The disc, about the tale of Sonny's love for Kara Lee through ups and downs and suspicions of murder, works quite nicely. While a story, it doesn't mean that there is a lot of filler. The songs, mixing straight ahead country with a rootsy feel, mesh well throughout. Krc's lead vocals capture the feel of the story quite well, starting with the lead-off title track. There is a slight nod to Dylan vocally and even John Lennon (the ballad "How Far Would You Go?"). The "Devil's Hand" finds the Apostles going for more of a rock feel with screaming guitar playing, while "Ciudad Hand" combines a Mexican and tremolo guitar sound. Get the idea that there is a lot going on? This may have been a risky effort, but give these guys credit for mixing it up and coming away with a winner.
