Essential Bluegrass: Bluegrass Legends (Pinecastle, 2006)

Various Artists

Reviewed by Larry Stephens

While this CD has some fine bluegrass music on it don't expect any new ground here. These songs have all been released previously and none of them are especially notable as a part of a compilation. "Foggy Mountain Top" had its day of popularity and "The Storms Are On The Ocean" has been a popular song for various artists through the years. This version is interesting as it pairs Bobby Osborne and Alison Krauss.

Other numbers on the CD make good listening but are not especially good reasons to run out and buy it. "On The Evening Train" has been around for decades. "Big Tiger Roars Again" is a rousing instrumental that includes Benny Martin and Gene Wooten and then there's the old time flavor of "Keep My Skillet Good & Greasy."

An interesting footnote that isn't mentioned in the liner notes is this looks like "The Larry Perkins Project." He is the only person to appear on every track and is always listed last in the credits. With nothing else to tie the songs selection together, you would think they were selected because of him.

Good, but not spectacular bluegrass.
