Live in Germany (Pinecastle, 2007)
The Osborne Brothers
Reviewed by George Hauenstein
Bobby and Sonny Osborne clearly belong in the top echelon of all-time bluegrass greats. Touring together since the '50s, this brother duet blended traditional bluegrass and country in a way that helped introduce the music to a wider audience. Sonny hung up his banjo and stopped touring a few years back. Bobby is still making music with Rocky Top X-press.
"Live in Germany" is a 2-CD/1 DVD package. Recorded and filmed in 1989, this full-length concert features many of the above hits and other classics like "Ruby," "Georgia Pineywoods, "Tennessee Hound Dog," "Windy City" and Midnight Flyer." The band here features Eldridge and Smith as well as Steve Thomas on fiddle. While the sound and picture quality is not as good as the simultaneously released "In Concert at Renfro Valley," the music is worth the less-than-studio quality production.
Bobby and Sonny Osborne helped make bluegrass music what it is today and influenced many of today's performers. This project is a must have for Osborne and bluegrass fans alike.
