Mary, Did You Know? (Word/Curb, 2007)

Various Artists

Reviewed by Dan MacIntosh

Unlike, say, the heavy metal and rap scenes, it's not too hard to find country artists comfortable enough to sing about their faith. Thus, Word Records has found a full house of Nashville's best to help keep Christ in Christmas. A few of these performers have also fairly strong Christian music followings. LeAnn Rimes, who sings "O Holy Night," has also released music into the Christian market. So has Randy Travis, who pitches in "Go Tell It on the Mountain."

This album's title was taken from Buddy Greene and Mark Lowry's composition, which attempts to get inside the teenaged Mary's head and heart during that famous manger scene. It's covered here by Kenny Rogers and Wynonna. Wynonna is also represented as one half of The Judds with "Silent Night."

Might there be a future classic new song contained here? On that front, Lonestar turns a popular holiday saying into song with "Reason for the Season," while Joseph gets equal time with Mary on "The Christ (A Song for Joseph)" by Billy Dean. Country goes to Christmas Mass for this one, and nobody comes off like a hypocrite.
