I'll Fly Away (Copper Creek, 2003)

Albert E. Brumley Jr.

Reviewed by Larry Stephens

Albert Brumley, Sr. is a familiar name in southern gospel, county and bluegrass music with more than 800 songs to his credit. Albert, Jr., is not as well known but he has enjoyed a career just on the fringe of country music fame. He has a smooth baritone voice especially suited to country and gospel music.

His new CD embraces the mentioned genres with songs that are gospel based, several written by his father. The instrumental background is all acoustic, the instruments of bluegrass, with top notch performances by all the musicians. This makes for an interesting and enjoyable mixture.

The songs selection includes the venerable gems "Rank Strangers" and "I'll Fly Away." Brumley wrote several songs that should be heard more in bluegrass circles, such as "Banjo Boy" and "Green Valley Farms." He's a talented entertainer from a talented family with this new CD that will leave you wanting to hear him again.
