Heart of Texas Contry Christmas (Hearts of Texas, 2012)

Various Artists

Reviewed by Dan MacIntosh

It's sad to say, but this 14-song set from Heart Of Texas Records artists is not just traditional, but also sounds old. After all, folks like George Hamilton IV are long time AARP members, as well as country singers. Tony Booth's scratchy singing during Winter Wonderland can be just a little trying.

However, a few of these song selections are fantastic, rarely heard country Christmas songs. Darrell McCall will bring tears to your eyes when he sings the prison carol, Christmas In Cell No. 9, while it's good fun to hear Buck Owens' old Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy, here sung by Kim Murray. Furthermore, the western swing of When It's Christmas Time In Texas gives the set plenty of regional flavor. For those that love Texas country music, this various artist set will give you a Lone Star stocking full.

However, because many of these singers have seen better vocal days, it by no means captures anybody in their prime. It's the same feeling one gets from listing to Wanda Jackson these days. Granted, it's wonderful she's still at it; it's just a little unnerving to hear older folks trying their best to play a young person's game.
