The Greatest Hits (RCA, 1996)

Clint Black

Reviewed by Dan Kuchar

In the resounding snore that is today's mainstream country music, Clint Black sticks out like a sore thumb. He sings better, plays better, writes better songs and looks better in a hat than 99 percent of the country male vocalists whose products grace our nation's retail shelves.

It comes as no surprise then that "The Greatest Hits" is a winner by any standard.

The songs, mostly penned by Black and long-time co-writer and guitarist Hayden Nicholas, are souvenirs of the first seven years of Black's fairy tale recording career that shows no signs of slowing down. Also included is a mesmerizing live performance of "Desperado" (Clint's contribution to the "Common Thread" album), his new single "Like The Rain" and two more new cuts.

This is definitely a collection you can just leave in your disk player. Furthermore, at a playing time just under one full hour, it is an excellent value as well.
