The Girl Next Door (River North, 1996)

Crystal Bernard

Reviewed by Paula Williams

Oh, no, another television star's recorded an album. Just how awful is Crystal Bernard's (Helen Chappell Hackett on NBC-TV's "Wings") appropriately named"The Girl Next Door"?

Surprisingly, not at all. Sure, it's not the mostinteresting country record ever made, nor is it any real standout, but herlifelong dedication to music is evident. Starting with an introduction from afour-year-old Crystal Lynn Bernard, through songs she co-wrote with Billy Dean (including the single "Have We Forgotten What Love Is") or Skip Ewing, on to spirited performances and touching ballads like "Miracle,"real promise can be found here. Whether this becomes the beginning of a successful singing career or a piece of trivia for television buffs is entirely up to Bernard - she's definitely got the talent for stardom if she sticks with it and doesn't give up with the lack of a top-10 hit from her commendable debut.
