In My Blood (Late August, 2025)

Cody Jinks

Reviewed by Donald Teplyske

Like all artists worthy the name, hard-living country outlaw Cody Jinks has matured as a singer-songwriter and human. Some bad habits have been left behind, but Jinks hasn't abandoned what has brought him success.

While he tends to limit himself to writing of current circumstances — life on the road, pursuing music and changing behavior — he does so very well. Featuring fellow road warriors Blackberry Smoke, "In My Blood" lays it out:

"It's in my blood,
it's in my bones
It's in every single word
To every single song,
I've been singin'"

"Lonely Man" paints a stark opening picture:
"Well the face that's starin' at me in the mirror,
ain't a face that a young man can recall...")

Albeit late in the process, Jinks is coming to terms with mortality with the realization that things had to change:

"I finally kicked the smokin' and the hard stuff,
I drank enough for three or four men's lives
More habits than an honest man should carry..."

Still newly sober and more reflective of his actions, Jinks hasn't changed his approach to his music. Violence, drinking and gunplay remain staples of Jinks' modus operandi.

"Something Wicked This Way Comes" explores ill-conceived actions ("No, you're never too young, never too old, to be caught up in something for which you will burn...) as does "See The Man" ("I never pulled the trigger, but I gave him the gun.") Neither of these songs celebrate nefarious actions, and both give equal measure to the resulting consequences with "See The Man" exclaiming too late and over aggressive guitar, "Go and put that bottle down." Still, someone is lying dead on the ground.

Increased sentimentality and welcome introspection is woven into "Found," "When You Can't Remember" and "When Time Didn't Fly" while evil remains close at hand within "Monster."

Recorded with his Tone Deaf Hippies including guitarists Chris Claridy and Jake Lentnor, pedal steel man Austin Tripp, drummer David Colvin and bassist Joshua Thompson, "In My Blood" doesn't get fancy: it is road-worn country rock.

"Adobe Sessions" and "I'm Not the Devil" may represent the peak of Jinks' earlier days; "In My Blood" is a testament to how far he has come.
