– Troy Jones, whose songs included the Billy Currington hit, "People Are Crazy," died on Sunday at 64 after suffering an electrical accident on his boat dock in Florida where he lived.
Songwriter Bobby Braddock said, "One day in the latter part of the 2000s decade, my friend, Frank Liddell, asked if I would collaborate with one of his writers (at Carnival Music, Frank"s company). When he told me his name was Troy Jones, I knew exactly who he was because A&R superstar Renee Bell at RCA had played me some of his songs and I was very impressed, and told Frank I would love to write with him. When I met Troy at the old firehouse next to Sony/ATV Publishing -- which houses several writers rooms -- it turned out to be my lucky day. "
"After we said hello and shook hands, he asked me, 'What do you think of this idea? God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy."
In an interview, Troy said "When I told him that, Bobby looked at me like I had two heads! But the more he thought about it, the more he liked it, and the lines started coming to us pretty fast. But we weren"t quite sure how to end it. When Bobby suggested that we make the old man in the song a millionaire, and have him die and leave his fortune not to his kids but to this stranger he'd met that night in the bar, I looked at Bobby like HE had two heads!" But in a little while, Troy was totally on board with it, and we had ourselves a song, "People Are Crazy." Billy Currington recorded it and it became a big hit, was nominated for CMA Song of the ear in 2010, and the "People Are Crazy" video has more YouTube views than any song I"ve ever been associated with."
Jones wrote other hits like Currington"s "Pretty Good at Drinkin" Beer" and George Strait and Kenny Chesney"s duet "Shift Work."
Jones was born and raised in Port Saint Joe, Fla.
