Young tops releases new disc; Denning, Cooper, McConnell drop new sounds

Friday, August 6, 2021 – Chris Young releases his eighth studio album, "Famous Friends," today. The title track is a hit single that Young recorded with Kane Brown. The album opens with "Raised On Country" – an ode to his influences in country music like Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Joe Diffie and George Strait. The 14 songs on the disc feature Young's own friends, including collaborations with Brown, Lauren Alaina and Mitchell Tenpenny. Young was among four producers on the CD.

Travis Denning, who has enjoyed some success on country radio, is out with his sophomore EP, "Dirt Road Down." The collection includes Denning's current goodbye singalong, "ABBY," and five additional songs co-written by the Georgian. The new release is the follow up to Denning's Top 20 debut EP earlier last year.

Kolby Cooper, who put out an EP last year on his own, dishes out his hard-edged country EP, "Boy From Anderson Country," on BBR Music Group / Wheelhouse. The release contains six songs, all in part penned by Cooper, a 21-year-old Texan.

Singer/songwriter Sean McConnell releases his 14th album, "A Horrible Beautiful Dream." McConnell, a Massachusetts native, last released "Secondhand Smoke" in 2019. He has penned songs for Meat Loaf, Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Buddy Miller, David Nail, Rascal Flatts, Scotty McCreery, Brothers Osborne, Eli Young Band and Brad Paisley

CD review - Famous Friends Given the massive success of Chris Young's award-winning collaboration with Kane Brown on the title track, it would be an easy assumption to make that his eighth studio album would tow the same contemporary line that landed him a bevy of hits. The result is exactly that. But with some contingencies The opener, "Raised on Country," starts out with a raucous groove that may get your toes tapping for the entirety, but the lyrics devolve into some painfully tired cliches like ...
CD review - A Horrible Beautiful Dream The title creates the expectation of a Sean McConnell album with a mix of dispiriting and uplifting themes, but "A Horrible Beautiful Dream" leans primarily to the dark. The Nashville-based singer/songwriter is best known for having songs recorded by artists as disparate as Brad Paisley, Brothers Osborne, Martina McBride and Tim McGraw, but has been recording for over two decades beginning with his debut in 2000 at age 15. This is largely a one-man show with McConnell producing, ...
CD review - Boy From Anderson County The "Boy" in the title is no joke – Kolby Cooper has a babyface that wouldn't look out of place in a maternity ward, even if his frame is the size of a Sasquatch. At an age when most folks are figuring out their first job, this East Texan has already married with two kids, and accumulated over 100 million streams of his power chord country. Cooper is catching that current of Chris Stapleton and Luke Combs-styled country. These guys can more than capably write and sing the ...
