McCoury, Stringdusters, Shovel & Rope are out today

Friday, February 18, 2022 – Del McCoury may be 83, but he's still making music. He's out today with "Almost Proud," a collection of 12 songs. Vince Gill provides the high country vocal for "Honky Tonk Nights." McCourx6y tapped into song from a recent Kris Kristofferson album called "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" as well. As usual, McCoury is backed by the Del McCoury Band—his sons Ronnie (mandolin) and Rob (banjo), as well as long time band members Alan Bartram (bass) and Jason Carter (fiddle).

Progressive bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters released "Toward the Fray," written in the wake of recent turmoil in the U.S. including the murder of George Floyd. The Stringdusters consist of Andy Hall (Dobro), Chris Pandolfi (banjo), Andy Falco (guitar), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle) and Travis Book (bass).

Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, the husband-and-wife duo known as Shovels and Rope, drop "Manticore." Originally planned as a stripped-down, acoustic-leaning release, the songs were written before the pandemic but recorded during it, resulting in a change of arrangements.

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, who previously were on Bloodshot Records, are out with their third album, "Nightroamer" (Thirty Tigers). The North Carolina-based quintet meshed honky tonk and rock, but expand that sound with a pop tint this time around. Led by Shook on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, The Disarmers are Eric Peterson (lead guitar), Aaron Oliva (bass), Jack Foster (drums) and Adam Kurtz (pedal steel).

Sean Stemaly debuts with "Product of a Small Town" on Big Loud Records. Stemaly co-wrote eight of the 14 songs on the disc, which was produced by Joey Moi with co-production by Derek Wells plus additional production on select tracks by Stemaly and Lex Lipsitz. At one point, the western Kentucky native was a heavy machinery operator.

CD review - Manticore Shovels & Rope, the husband/wife duo group of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, gives us a pained collection of songs with "Manticore." The title was inspired by the Strength Tarot card, which represents mastering raw emotions in order to bring calm to yourself or a situation. And because this album was recorded during a pandemic – where we all needed to try our best to master raw emotions – it's more than a fitting album name. With that said, though, Shovels & ...
CD review - Almost Proud Since the mid-nineties, there has not been a more substantial bluegrass outfit than The Del McCoury Band. There has likely not been a more recognized set of musicians since the International Bluegrass Music Awards started to be handed out in 1990. McCoury himself was the organization's first Male Vocalist of the Year, an award he was now received five times; further, each current member of the group, from bassist Alan Bartrum and banjoist Rob McCoury (one each) to fiddler Jason Carter (five ...
CD review - Rise Sun Like many modern bluegrass bands, the Infamous Stringdusters tend to tap tradition, but only as far as it helps navigate their way towards the mainstream. Granted, the basic accoutrements are there - as evidenced in the confluence of fiddles, banjos, resonator guitar, mandolin and high harmonies - but this band, like such storied contemporaries as the Steep Canyon Rangers, Town Mountain, Punch Brothers, the Sam Bush Band and the like, place more of an emphasis on melody than simply on their ...
