Wade discloses she's having double mastectomy
"I'll go in depth later, but I was diagnosed with the #rad51d gene a while back," Wade posted on her Instagram account. "In November I'll undergo a double mastectomy as a preventative. As always appreciate you all ❤️"
Wade, a country/Americana singer with the well-received album "Reckless" under her belt, offered info about the gene.
"Women with a #RAD51D mutation have about a 10-20 percent lifetime risk for ovarian, fallopian tube or primary peritoneal cancer (these three cancers and their risks are related and are often referred to together as ovarian cancer. Women with a #RAD51D mutation have about a 20-40 percent lifetime risk for breast cancer with a tendency for triple-negative breast cancer."
Wade received support from sesewral other artists. Maren Morris posted, "You're a badass.,"
Jason Isbell said, "You're strong. Respect."
Lindsey Ell commented, "I see you. ❤️💪🏼"
Wade had a follow-up post, saying she was doing this to have "a long healthy life." "Thank you all so much for the love. I feel so blessed to have so much support. ❤️ to those of you who are upset (I don't understand why) that I am taking preventative measures - please don't waste your time. I want a long healthy life. That's why I'm doing this. I am not excited to chop off parts of my body. I am not excited to be laying in a bed for a bit recovering. But I am happy to know that after November I will have peace of mind. I am in the hands of a great doctor / plastic surgeon. I am thankful for detecting this now. Much love to you all."
Wade will release a new disc, "Psychopath," on Aug. 25.
