Janson, O'Brien, Leigh, Jones dish out new music

Friday, June 16, 2023 – Chris Janson goes back in time with "The Outlaw Side of Me." The outlaw is a reference to the Outlaw Country sound that predominates the disc, a departure for Janson. Another change is that this is his first release for Big Machine Label Group after having been on Warner. Brantley Gilbert helps out on "Hanke the Hell Out of the Honky Tonk." Darius Rucker guests on "Every Day of the Week," while Dolly Parton and Slash of Guns 'N' Roses, are on "21 Forever."

Four decades in, Tim O'Brien decided to do something different on "Cup of Sugar." The acoustic musician wrote all 13 songs, something he has never done. O'Brien is backed by his loyal band mates Mike Bub, Shad Cobb and wife Jan Fabricius, supplemented by Jamie Dick on drums, Mike Rojas on keyboards, Russ Pahl on steel guitar, and Cory Walker on banjo. Bluegrass master Del McCoury lends his guitar and tenor vocal on "Let the Horses Run." Co-writers include Ronnie Bowman, Jonathon Byrd, Shawn Camp and Thomm Jutz.

Texas singer Brennan Leigh's latest album, ", Ain't Through Honky Tonkin'" on Signature Sounds. has a vintage country sound, dating back to the '60s. Marty Stuart and Rodney Crowell help out.

Willie Jones, who combines soul/hip hop vibe with a bit of a country vibe with steel guitar, banjo, and harmonica, releases his first full-length through Sony Music Nashville and The Penthouse, "Something to Dance to." Jones had a hand in writing all 10 songs.

CD reviews for Chris Janson

CD review - All In Chris Janson, who has made it well known how he's skilled at fixing drinks, expectedly comes to party much of the time on "All In." Janson has plenty on his mind, and it's all included herein. The most unusual song is "You, Me & The River," which also features its writer, Eric Church, singing along with Janson. ...
CD review - Real Friends "Real Friends" is a showcase for the rubberband quality of Chris Janson's voice. He's got a Mel Tillis stammer in "Check" and a Florida Georgia Line yowl in "Normal People." Kenny Chesney should get a royalty check on "Everybody's Going Through Something." But what's noticeably different about Janson is touch. His songs deftly sprinkle on a dash of horns, rock or hip-hop. But it's all county-infused flavors added by a chef in control. ...
CD review - Everybody Chris Janson's full-length release, "Everybody," includes the same party songs that first appeared on his "Fix A Drink" EP. And while the full length adds more evidence for his image as a good time party starter, it also reveals his softer side, presenting a more well-rounded performer. "Bein' A Dad" is a quiet, sentimental song about parenthood. When Janson sings, "God, I love bein' a dad," he sounds just like Eric Church, a performer ...
