Moreland goes live at Third Man
Tuesday, September 26, 2023 – John Moreland will release "Live At Third Man Records LP" on Nov. 10, 2023.
The Oklahomas native recorded direct-to-acetate at Third Man Records Nashville's Blue Room venue on Nov. 12, 2022."Dim Little Light," from last year's album "Bird in the Ceiling," is out now.
"It was cold, I was tired, the room was blue, the crowd was lovely," Moreland said about the night of his performance.
Third Man Records' live direct-to-acetate recordings take place in the Blue Room in Nashville, TN and are cut exclusively on a 1955 Scully lathe that originally came from King Records in Cincinnati. Recorded live in one-shot, with no overdubs, no redo's, no starting-and-stopping, the process is only available nowadays in TMR's locations in Detroit and Nashville.

John Moreland oftentimes gets lumped into the Americana genre, probably because he doesn't really fit anyplace else. Although he's from Longview, Texas, he's recorded for the alternative label 4AD in the past. That's a British imprint better known for alternative acts, like Cocteau Twins and The Pixies. Moreland's music isn't anything like those. Then again, he's not exactly all that country – traditional or otherwise -- either.

John Moreland sings songs about love, mostly desperate love - like the variety sung of during The Band-esque "Love is Not an Answer" - on "Big Bad Luv." Via the latter, he confesses, "I don't need an answer/I need you." Yes, he wants love, but he needs connection.
