Prine family donates Wurlitzer to Country Music Hall of Fame

Tuesday, October 10, 2023 – The family of John Prine donated his 1942 Wurlitzer jukebox to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's collection this past weekend.

The jukebox, which is now on display in the museum's galleries, was a gift to Prine from his friend and fellow singer-songwriter Steve Goodman, who wanted to thank him for co-writing Goodman's first country hit, "You Never Even Called Me by My Name." Prine refused to take credit or accept any royalties for the song.

During a conversation and performance in the museum's Ford Theater, Prine's window, Fiona Whelan Prine, and her son, Jody Whelan, discussed John's longtime support of the museum and shared the story of the jukebox.

Purchased by Goodman with part of his royalties from the hit song, Prine made the Wurlitzer his own, filling it with classic and obscure country, pop and R&B singles, even several Christmas carols.

The program, which was presented in conjunction with You Got Gold: Celebrating the Life & Songs of John Prine, explored Prine's musical beginnings in Chicago, from performing at open mics to his breakout success with his 1971 debut album. The program featured commentary and performances by Greg Cahill, banjo player and founding member of Chicago-based bluegrass band Special Consensus; Mark Guarino, journalist and author of "Country and Midwestern: Chicago in the History of Country Music and the Folk Revival;" and singer-songwriter Bonnie Koloc, an influential member of the 1970s Chicago folk community. The program was filmed and will premiere at a later date as part of the museum's Live at the Hall digital programs series, available to stream on the museum's website.

A special concert, The Prine Family Presents: You Got Gold — Celebrating the Songs of John Prine, was held in the museum's CMA Theater this weekend. A portion of the proceeds supported the nonprofit museum's Words & Music program and honored the memory of Peter Cooper, who served as senior director, producer and writer for the museum.

Prine was named the museum's artist-in-residence in 2020. He accepted the appointment, but died of COVID before he could participate in the residency.

CD reviews for John Prine

CD review - The Tree of Forgiveness Mortality is very much on the mind of John Prine on this, his first album of all-new songs in 13 years. Understandably. After all, this is a man who has survived lung cancer and squamous cell cancer, the latter of which took a toll on his vocal cords. He's also had two knee replacements and a hip replacement. "All the TSA guys know me," jokes the legendary 71-year-old singer-songwriter. There are odes to the Almighty ("Boundless Love") and reflections on human limitations ...
CD review - For Better, Or Worse With "For Better or Worse," John Prine follows up his "In Spite of Ourselves" album with more male/female duets. And this one is a true A-list effort, as it finds Prine trading lines with the likes of Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves and Alison Krauss. Once again, though, Iris DeMent steals the show with the angry and sarcastic "Who's Gonna Take the Garbage Out," the same way she did with the prior album's title cut. She's a worthy sparring partner, ...
CD review - In Person & On Stage John Prine holds a well-deserved spot in the songwriters' pantheon. So, it's always a bit disappointing when a new Prine release isn't stocked with new Prine songs. After producing 7 albums between 1971-1980, he has only made a handful of albums of originals since then, although he has done a couple covers projects, the "Souvenirs" re-recordings album, a Christmas disc and now his third live album. That said, there are bountiful joys in listening to Prine performing ...
