Ely supports "Love and Freedom"

Friday, January 24, 2025 – Joe Ely will release "Love and Freedom" on Feb. 7 via Rack 'Em Records / Thirty Tigers.

Ely returns with 13 songs written by Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and Woody Guthrie along with material he penned. Ely released a new single "Shake 'Em Up," which he describes as "an ode to dice games in the Wild West."

"I'm really appreciative of everyone's help in putting this album together," said Ely. "To me, 'Love and Freedom' is a reminder of the times we're living in right now, and I hope it resonates with whoever takes the time to listen."

Co-produced alongside frequent collaborator Lloyd Maines (Miranda Lambert, Kris Kristofferson), "Love and Freedom" unveils songs from Ely's recording vault over the course of several decades at Spur Studios, his home studio facility outside of Austin. Among the songs are a Ryan Bingham-featured take on Woody Guthrie's protest anthem "Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)" and the Clark cut, "Magdalene."

Ely would record these tracks during time spent off the road.

"Love and Freedom" follows Ely's 2024 official road album, "Driven to Drive."

The track list is:
1. Shake 'Em Up
2. Adios Sweet Dreams
3. Magdalene – Written by Guy Clark
4. Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos) [featuring Ryan Bingham] – Written by Woody Guthrie
5. Waitin' Around to Die – Written by Townes Van Zandt

7. Today It Did

9. For the Sake of the Song
Here's to the Brave

CD review - Love + Freedom Ever since Joe Ely released "Love in the Midst of Mayhem" during the pandemic in 202O, he's dug into his catalog to produce three more albums, the latest being "Love and Freedom," to hit just two days before his 78th birthday. His voice remains as strong as ever as Ely confesses that some of these songs are more radical than one might expect. It's his way of urging us to stand up and speak out. These are themes of immigration, poverty, war, justice, freedom and other ...
CD review - Flatland Lullaby The songwriter's prime directive is to translate personal observations and emotions into creative expressions that are more broadly universal. So what happens when a songwriter follows the inverse formula, and channels some of the most categorically omnipresent human feelings into songs that are aimed at the narrowest possible audience? The answer to that rarely considered question is all over Joe Ely's latest archive release from his own Rack 'Em label, the highly personal and ...
CD review - Love in the Midst of Mayhem Over the past 14 years, Joe Ely has earned a reputation as one of the forebears of that unique branch of Americana borne from the Great State of Texas. Both individually, and as part of the super band, The Flatlanders, he's carved out a career as an essential insurgent, one who once kept company with The Clash while establishing some decidedly cool credentials of his own. While the title might suggest otherwise, the hastily released "Love in the Midst of Mayhem" finds ...
