Cumberland University honors Charlie Daniels

Sunday, April 13, 2008 – Charlie Daniels and his wife will be honored in May by Cumberland University at graduation ceremonies with an award for their community service.

On Saturday, May 3, Daniels and his wife, Hazel will received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, according to CU President Dr. Harvill C. Eaton. The award established by the New York Southern Society in 1925 in memory of Sullivan, a Southerner who became a prominent lawyer, businessman and philanthropist in New York during the late 19th century. Each year, Cumberland University presents the award to a deserving member of the community for their service and dedication to helping others.

"The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award is presented to a community member who ennobles and beautifies living and binds people in mutual love and helpfulness. Charlie and Hazel Daniels have always championed service above self and have led truly inspiring lives. We are proud to present them with this prestigious award," Eaton said.

The Daniels will receive their honor for helping those in need. "It's amazing to me how Charlie and Hazel, who have no doubt kept some of the busiest schedules in music over the years, always found plenty of time to serve others. They are a shining example of the importance of teamwork and, therefore, ideal examples for our graduates. From their support of our brave military men and women to their contributions to young people in need, this loving couple represents what it means to have a servant's heart," Eaton said.

"It is a very special thing to be honored by your friends and neighbors," Daniels said.

CD review - A Bluegrass Christmas Charlie Daniels has recorded what he calls a bluegrass Christmas CD, although he isn't so exclusive that there are only bluegrass folks helping him out. His friends also include country singer Aaron Tippin (Christmas Time Down South) and folksinger Jewel (Blue Christmas). Daniels also made sure everybody knows full well that this is a Southern Christmas music collection. Song titles include Christmas Time Down South, Mississippi Christmas and A Carolina Christmas Carol. ...
CD review - Preachin', Prayin', Singin' DVD Charlie Daniels has his Southern rock personality (exemplified by The Devil Went Down To Georgia) and he also has his spiritual side (as he's known to join Billy Graham crusades now and again). But when the fiddler/guitarist first arrived in Nashville, he befriended folks like banjo great, Earl Scruggs, and his two sons, Gary and Randy. These three players appear with Daniels during this mainly bluegrass set, along with Del McCoury, The Whites and Mac Wiseman. Bluegrass gospel songs make up ...
