Dry Branch Fire Squad to release first studio CD in six years
Monday, December 1, 2008 – Dry Branch Fire Squad will release their first all new studio album since 2001 in late January 2009, Rounder Records announced Monday.
"Echoes of the Mountains" will be out Jan. 27. The band's last all studio disc was 2001's "Hand Hewn." Led by singer, mandolin-picker and raconteur Ron Thomason, Dry Branch Fire Squad has been around for three decades.
"Echoes of the Mountains" includes Echo Mountain, Rider on an Orphan Train and O Captain! My Captain!
Dry Branch Fire Squad is Thomason (lead vocals and mandolin), Brian Aldridge (guitar, mandolin and harmony vocals), Tom Boyd (banjo, Dobro and vocals) and Dan Russell (bass and guitar).
Beginning May 19, the band will perform at festivals and concert halls throughout the U.S. Upcoming tour dates are listed below.

It is not uncommon these days to go to a bluegrass festival and hear a band playing old time music, the kind that pre-dates Bill Monroe's shaping of the sound into bluegrass. Dry Branch Fire Squad (DBFS to fans) is as well known for founder Ron Thomason's humor as the music. This two-disc set provides plenty of both. Recorded live, it provides an interlude of wit between each song. Thomason is folksy and funny and can be reflective ("Green Pastures and Equine Dignity"). They include some old time music in this set, but you'll see a number of tunes familiar in bluegrass, such as "Shine, Hallelujah, Shine" and "Roanoke."
