Benefit aids Charlie Louvin

Monday, November 8, 2010 – A late October benefit for Charlie Louvin, who is battling from pancreatic cancer, raised about $20,000 to help him with medical bills.

"I'm thrilled with all the people that were here and I appreciate the folks who gave something to the auction," said Louvin.

"I'm not surprised, not really," said singer Valerie Smith, who helped host the event. "Everybody loves Charlie, and everybody wants to be able to give back to someone who has given so much to country music."

The highlight was a set of five Louvin Brothers songs performed by Alison Krauss along with Union Station members Ron Block and Jerry Douglas, her brother Viktor Krauss and friend Carmella Ramsey.

"Being on the same stage as Alison Krauss was enough to keep the thrill going from here on out," said Louvin. "She blew my hat in the creek when she offered to perform, but when she said they'd do all Louvin Brothers songs, well, that just cinched it for me."

The evening included performances by Patsy and Donna Stoneman of the Stoneman Family; Valerie Smith & Becky Buller; Wildwood Valley Boys; Jon Weisberger; Mike Scott; Ray Wix, Michael Cleveland, Mike Allen; Bobby Powell; Jeff Berry; Jeff Haley, Wilford Ray; Billy Kitchen; Kristi Morris Band; Shane Blackwell; Kraig Smith and other.

David Boley of the Foggy Hollow Bluegrass Gatherin' in Webster's Chapel, Ala., presented Louvin with a plaque commemorating the entertainer's induction into the Alabama Bluegrass Hall of Fame. Louvin, who now lives in Wartrace, Tenn., is a native of Henagar, Ala.

Rhonda Vincent could not be at the event, but put together a package including a signed Martin 000 guitar, which was auctioned on her website for $1,900.

CD reviews for Charlie Louvin

CD review - The Battle Rages On Several years ago, a childhood hero hawked autographs during an old-timers game. Watching a once larger-than-life figure reduced to scrawling his name on penny cards for $20 was distressing, but the money was paid to a man who - it appeared - had no room in his life for false pride. The message was clear: he was doing what he needed to do. That experience came back while listening to "The Battle Rages On," the latest from Country Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member Charlie Louvin. ...
CD review - Charlie Louvin Sings Murder Ballads and Disaster Songs Charlie Louvin is an old pro, and the latter term is no less true than the former. More than four decades after his brother and singing partner, Ira, met his maker on a highway in Missouri, Louvin is still churning out albums, many of them with a gospel theme. He handles the material here quite capably, but the theme might have been better suited to Ira. Louvin's arrangements are downright buoyant and, partly for that reason, the album lacks the visceral impact its title portends. ...
CD review - Steps to Heaven Charlie Louvin is back with one of the most straightforward gospel albums of his long, distinguished career, and hosannas are in order. At 81, he's hardly the same singer who elevated the art of tight harmonies with his brother, Ira, in the 1940s and '50s. However, collaboration is no less vital on this, his third studio album of the last three years(!). The Lord may have to wait a while to reclaim the younger Mr. Louvin. Louvin is in fine voice, but it is the strident, starchy piano ...
