Doyle Lawson announces new band member
Spears, who also will handle lead and harmony vocals, "is a longtime student and fan of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and he understands the style - when we got together, the vocal blend with the trio and quartet was extremely pleasing to my ear," said Lawson. "I'm looking forward to his vocal input as well as having another songwriter in the band.
Spears, who penned "Ocean Of Teardrops" on Lawson's latest release, "More Behind The Picture Than The Wall," will start his new duties with Quicksilver on a yet-to-be-determined date. He will replace Jamie Dailey, one of three band members to leave along with Mike Hartgrove and Terry Baucom.
Spears has had songs recorded by Lou Reid, IIIrd Tyme Out, The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Bluegrass Patriots and The Special Consensus, which he joined in 2004.
Lawson is gearing up for a round of coast-to-coast performances and honors including stops at California's Stage Coach country music festival (May 6); his own bluegrass festival in Denton, NC (May 10-13) and Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Southpaw for a Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts performance on June 1.
On May 5, Lawson will deliver this year's commencement address and receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree at King's College in Bristol, Tenn.
