Diamond Rio signs with Word, plans Xmas CD

Wednesday, August 29, 2007 – Diamond Rio signed with Word, a Christian music label, and will release its first Christmas project, Oct. 9.

For years, Diamond Rio has wanted to record a Christmas project. "A Diamond Rio Christmas: The Star Still Shines" will feature classic holiday songs along with the original title track. The CD will be distributed by Word Distribution in the Christian and country markets.

This is not a one-off deal as Diamond Rio is slated to release a studio disc next year.

The band was previously on Arista Nashville where the group enjoyed a slew of hits starting with "Meet in the Middle" in 1991 Diamond Rio's last number 1 was "I Believe" in 2002.

"We are honored to have the opportunity to work with Diamond Rio," says Susan Riley, Senior Vice President of A&R and Publishing for Word Label Group. "We have been fans of the group for a long time and are excited to serve them in the country realm, which they have built for many years, as well as providing opportunities for their music in the Christian market. The band has been wonderful to work with, and we are looking forward to a great future with them."

"It is a very exciting time being in Diamond Rio right now," said Jimmy Olander, who plays electric and acoustic guitar for the group. "The folks at Word share with us, not only a great passion for the music, but an even greater passion for the message. This is a great fit."

Leader vocalist for Diamond Rio, Marty Roe, agreed with Olander. "We are incredibly excited about our new partnership. It is opening up a new chapter in our careers, and we are looking forward to exploring new musical opportunities."

Diamond Rio has retained its original lineup, including Roe, Olander, Gene Johnson (mandolin, vocals), Brian Prout (drums), Dana Williams (bass, vocals), and Dan Truman (keyboards, piano). The band's career includes more than 10-million albums sales; 9 number 1 singles, 6 Vocal Group of the Year awards (Country Music Association & Academy of Country Music), 13 Grammy nominations, and named Grand Ole Opry members in 1988.

Diamond Rio will take this new collection of music on the road and is planning a Christmas tour in conjunction with the new CD.

CD reviews for Diamond Rio

CD review - A Diamond Rio Christmas: The Star Still Shines Few of this year's Christmas albums discs are as truly country as Diamond Rio's. It doesn't get any better than the bluegrass-y instrumental interplay of "Sleigh Ride," which clicks along like a fast train with banjo plucking and acoustic guitar picking. Better still is Gene Johnson's speedy mandolin work, which is all over the place. And if that's not enough, these guys also harmonize tremendously well together. Furthermore, it's easy to warm up to the ...
CD review - Greatest Hits II It's been 16 years since Diamond Rio's first single "Meet in the Middle" went straight to the top of the charts, which is an eternity in today's country world. They've had their ups and downs along the way, of course, but just the fact that they're still together and still making music together makes them worthy of our attention, even though they've been overshadowed in recent years by Rascal Flatts and other bands that followed in their footsteps. Part of the reason they're still around when so ...
Diamond Rio has always had a broad stylistic range, but on their latest, the sextet has come up with an assortment of cuts that cut an even wider swath through the country mainstream. It may not have much in the way of artistic coherence, but this more than makes up for it by offering a collection that has something for just about every kind of country music fan. Though the band does a typically polished job on big ballads ("I Believe" and the title track among them) and peppy country-rockers ...
