Just a Matter of Time (Mercury, 2006)

Randy Rogers Band

Reviewed by John Walker

With their first major label record, the Randy Rogers Band delivers a taste of guitar-driven Texas style music with a little country flavor. Long recognized as one of the best bands in Texas, producer Radney Foster, an accomplished singer/songwriter himself, showcases the creative artistic talents of the Randy Rogers Band. This album is not a typical Nashville cookie-cutter release, but rougher-edged with true grit.

Rogers' strong vocals are backed by a talented full band including Jon Richardson at bass, Les Lawless on drums, Geoffrey Hill on a driving guitar, and Brady Black playing a great fiddle. The quality sound accentuates their writing talents as well. All but 1 of the 12 songs on the album, the initial single "Kiss Me In the Dark" which was written by Foster and George Ducas, was penned by the band.

From the very beginning of the first song "Better Off Wrong", which includes pounding drums and hard guitar, to the last song, the haunting ballad "Whiskey's Got A Hold On Me" with its mesmerizing slow fiddle, the album flows with a great mixture of energy and passion.
