"Houston, We Got a Problem" includes a smart lyric highlighting specific details about that big Texas city. Even though it has all these famous landmarks, it doesn't have this man's girl. "I still feel like I landed on the moon," he admits at one point, alluding to the city's NASA association. "Beautiful Crazy" quiets the mood. Over a mostly acoustic backing - notably fiddle and acoustic guitar - Combs sings a sweet love song. In this case, a girl's craziness is actually an admirable trait. "Yeah, she's crazy, but her crazy is beautiful to me," he admits. "A Long Way" finds Combs getting a little nostalgic. When things were good during his younger years, these times just seemed to go on forever. "She Got the Best of Me" grapples with a relationship that took a lot out of a guy. "You get what's left of me," he warns his new girl, because "she got the best of me." "Must've Never Met You" is another post-breakup song. With its lyric, Combs rebuts many of the clichés empathetic friends use to help pick up a broken heart hearted guy. "Whoever said it ain't the end of he world and you'll find somebody new/Never met you," he responds. When a heart is freshly broken, such comforting words just aren't comforting - yet.
One could look at these added songs as a cynical way to make even more money off an already successful album. But these additions are all so good, they're darn near essential. Combs is proving to be one of today's best new country songwriters, and this deluxe collection offers further proof.
