Whisperin' Bluegrass (Madacy, 2007)

Bill Anderson

Reviewed by C. Eric Banister

After over 40 years in country music, Bill Anderson reaches back to his roots as a South Carolina kid and applies his whisperin' style to bluegrass. He paints the picture in "I've Got a Thing About a Five String," one of three new songs on the project.

Anderson includes two other new songs, "My Perfect Reason" and "Everything I Want (And Not a Thing I Need)" and draws several more from his deep catalog of songs often made famous by other artists such as "The Cold Hard Facts of Life" and the ACM and CMA Song of the Year "Give It Away."

Half of the 16 songs are gospel songs drawn from both hymns (such as "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace") and bluegrass gospel songs ("Using My Bible for a Roadmap").

Appearing in either duets or harmony are Vince Gill, Dolly Parton, Jon Randall, Willie Nelson and longtime duet partner Jan Howard.

A DVD, "Decades of Music," is included and presents a backstage look at the beginnings of Anderson's great career and offers an excellent tribute to a man who still contributes to the growth and future of country music.
