Those Darlins (Oh Wow Dang, 2009)

Those Darlins

Reviewed by Jeffrey B. Remz

Those Darlins are not exactly country, and they're not precisely punk (their tattoos may help in that respect), but the three young Murfreesboro, Tenn. Darlins (that's the surname the three women - Nikki on ukelele/vocals, Jessi on guitar/bass/vocals and Kelley on bass/guitar/vocals - use) make a lot of good music on their full-length debut.

There's a care-free, fun attitude merging both country and punk from the start of Red Light Love. That vibe continues on DUI or Die. The humor is apparent on many songs, including the old time style of the acoustic Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy with shouts and clapping in the background.

The Darlins may, in fact, translate better live than on CD. Though quite good, the CD doesn't demonstrate the vigor of Those Darlins' live show. The Whole Damn Thing comes off slightly static on CD, but in the flesh, it's a different story.

The punky edge is there sonically on Who's That Knockin' At My Window?, where the playing thankfully isn't particularly exact, and the vocals sound far away. But they also alter it musically, following that up with the way more spare, slightly old time feel of Glass to You.

Those Darlins make music uncommon to the Nashville country of today - there's an edge to it you just don't hear nowadays. Whatever style Those Darlins pursue, the sound is most welcome.
