Outta My Head (Bigger Picture, 2012)

Craig Campbell

Reviewed by Michael Rampa

Think of Craig Campbell's "Outta My Head" EP as a batter in the on deck circle. The title track will be the lead single on his upcoming sophomore album with Bigger Picture. Coming in at just over 16 minutes, its brevity is matched only by its catchiness. Each of the five tracks has lead single potential. Styles range from the reggae tinged My Baby's Daddy to the rocking Keep Them Kisses Comin.'

Having spent time playing with Tracy Byrd, Campbell is cut from the traditionalist cloth. Instrumentation is sparse and effective with pedal steel and fiddle throughout. He had a hand in co-writing two of the tracks - the ode to slowing down titled That's Why God Made a Front Porch and the touching When She Grows Up.

The title track is an easy swinger with a catchy echo guitar riff reminiscent of Kenny Chesney's Somewhere With You. The collection features five different themes and musical stylings that are distinct and cohesive at the same time.
