Regifted (Audium Nashville, 2020)

Ty Herndon

Reviewed by Dan MacIntosh

With "Regifted," Ty Herndon goes the traditional route in creating a holiday album. Even so, though, his collection of mostly familiar carols and seasonal songs includes a few creative turns.

The album kicks off with a powerful ballad, "Orphans of God," a duet with Kristin Chenoweth. Then for "Oh Come All Ye Faithful," this familiar hymn is arranged with prominent percussion and a backing vocal that gives it a fresh, South African music feel. "Little Drummer Boy" is transformed into a gospel choir-backed recording and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" is western swinged with Herndon even scatting on the intro. "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" returns to close out the album, this time with just Herndon singing it without any instrumental accompaniment.

Herndon's vocals are strong throughout and prove to be flexible enough to sound comfortable in all these varying sonic templates. Arrangements, while eclectic, are not particularly country. Nevertheless, they're not overly pop, either. "Regifted" is a success because it thoughtfully revisits mostly familiar holiday territory and never sounds like it's merely regurgitating it. Therefore, it's almost certain to put a smile on your face after you open it.
