Platt departs from Steep Canyon Rangers

Monday, April 25, 2022 – Steep Canyon Rangers announced today the departure of founding member and singer Woody Platt.

After 23 years with the band, Platt has stepped away from touring. He will be playing his final shows with the band over the next few months.

"Being a Steep Canyon Ranger has been one of the highlights of my life!," said Platt. "I was so fortunate to meet a few wonderful friends in college while simultaneously reconnecting with childhood friends and together, from the ground up, we built something truly special! It's been an honor and absolute joy to be a member of this band. I'm incredibly excited to see what gold lies ahead for my brothers in music - the Steep Canyon Rangers."

The acoustic group started playing music together as friends at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the late '90s. The three-time Grammy nominees have released 13 studio albums, three collaborative albums with actor/banjoist Steve Martin, been inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. In 2013, "Nobody Knows You" won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album, while 2012's "Rare Bird Alert" and 2020's "North Carolina Songbook" garnered nominations in the same category.

"Obviously, Steep Canyon Rangers wouldn't be where we are without Woody; we'll miss him, and we wish him all the success in the world in his next chapter. Right now, we've got a renewed energy around the change. It's given us a chance to unlock everyone's talent and has made room for us to step into some new roles. We truly think our fans are going to love where we're heading right now and can't wait to get it on stage and in the studio."

The Rangers, including Platt, are currently in the studio in Asheville, N.C., working on a new single to be released next month.

The Steep Canyon Rangers are Graham Sharp (vocals/banjo), Mike Guggino (vocals/mandolin/mandola), Nicky Sanders (vocals/fiddle), Mike Ashworth (vocals/bass) and Barrett Smith (vocals/guitar) plus Platt.

CD reviews for Steep Canyon Rangers

CD review - Morning Shift Just about a quarter-century ago, the Steep Canyon Rangers arrived on the bluegrass scene as one of the freshest new, young bands on the circuit, a quartet of former University of North Carolina students with a firm grounding in the traditions of the music, yet unafraid to venture off into uncharted territory. More than a dozen albums later – not to mention critically acclaimed collaborations with legendary comedian and banjo player Steve Martin – the Rangers are back with their ...
CD review - Arm in Arm The Steep Canyon Rangers are best known over the past decade for backing Steve Martin in his musical pursuits, but the North Carolina-based outfit has been active since 2000, and "Arm In Arm" marks their third release in 2020 alone. Bluegrass is at the core of the music infused with substantial doses of country, folk and rock. The set kicks off with a pair of the stronger bluegrass tunes that are thematically polar opposite with "One Drop of Rain" lamenting a troubled ...
CD review - North Carolina Songbook The mandolin and fiddle instrumental break during "Stand By Me," exemplifies what makes Steep Canyon Rangers' "Songbook" something special. "Stand By Me" has likely already been covered to death. You may say that until you reach this instrumental insertion, which - for a moment - may make you believe this supportive lyric was always part of a bluegrass song. Steep Canyon Rangers plays an album of all covers, recorded live at MerleFest 2019, and it's ...
