Zac Brown Band's Hopkins diagnosed with ALS

Friday, May 20, 2022 – Zac Brown Band's John Driskell Hopkins has been diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, he said today.

In a video released on YouTube, Hopkins appeared with his band mates.

"I have tough news to share and my brothers and sister have gathered to support me," said Hopkins, 51. "Over the past several years, I have noticed some balance issues and some stiffness in my hands. After careful analysis by some of the country's top neurologists, I have been diagnosed with ALS.

"Because my symptoms have been slow progressing from the start, we believe they will be slow progressing going forward. God willing, Iplan to be rocking with these amazing peole for many yars to come."

Zac Brown said progress had been made in dealing with ALS, but more was needed. He urged viewers to donate to Hop on a Cure, which Hopkins founded, to combat ALS. People can text "HOP" to 345-345 to make a donation.

Country Aircheck reported that Hopkins was writing songs and preparing for a fourth Christmas album.

Hopkins first met Brown in 1998 in Atlanta.

That might be why the album's name is so appropriate. Fans have gotten to know the country-folk band, but a deviant creeps in on all 16 tracks of its fourth album. And, like the classic story, Hyde stands out as more interesting. It hits hard, too. The opener, "Beautiful Drug," has an electric-pop ...
