Hull hits the road
The tour includes the premiere of a special commissioned piece written for the FreshGrass Festival in North Adams, Mass. on Sept. 23. Hull will wrap the year as a featured guest with Cory Wong (Vulfpeck) in November and Béla Fleck's My Bluegrass Heart in December.

Singer, songwriter and mandolinist Sierra Hull issued her first album in five years, her first independent release and the first with her touring band for "A Tip Toe HIgh Wire." Hull's touring band includes guitarist Shaun Richardson, fiddler Avery Merritt, bassist Erik Coveney and drummer Mark Raudabaugh. Hull plays mandolin, octave mandolin, acoustic and electric guitars and sings lead and harmony vocals. She wrote the 10 songs, most with co-writers.

It says a lot for a young player's career that they can create a retrospective of their life through music at age 25. Somehow, Sierra Hull has struck the right note(s) and achieved that goal. Hull is a preternaturally gifted player who commands her mandolin. But her voice is strong, and song writing startling. There's lots to see here.

It has been nearly five years since Sierra Hull released a record. 2012's "Daybreak" (also on Rounder) featured startling mandolin playing by Hull and a strong, but still tentative, vocal style. "Weighted Mind" doesn't hold back on either score, and it's a beautiful work of contemporary bluegrass music.
