Nelson receives LBJ Foundation honor

Thursday, March 23, 2023 – The LBJ Foundation will present its most prestigious honor, the LBJ Liberty & Justice for All Award, to Willie Nelson on May 12 at a gala dinner at the LBJ Presidential Library.

A lifelong advocate for farmers, alleviating food insecurity and support of rural communities, Nelson embodies President Lyndon Baines Johnson's commitment to public service.

Net proceeds from the gala tribute will benefit the newly established Willie Nelson Endowment for Rural Communities at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, a part of The University of Texas at Austin.

The endowment will fund research and student fellowships focused on sustainable agriculture, eliminating hunger, resilient energy, sustainable water and natural disaster recovery to benefit rural and farm communities.

Larry Temple, Chairman of the LBJ Foundation Board of Trustees, said, "Willie Nelson is a national treasure who gained fame through his sheer musical talent and won hearts as someone who truly cares about the lives of his fellow Americans. A product of rural Texas, Willie has never forgotten where he comes from. His longtime efforts to raise money and awareness for family farmers through Farm Aid and numerous other endeavors to help those in need throughout his career make him a true inspiration." President Johnson and Nelson share similar backgrounds as rural Texans, aware of the struggles of those who work in the agricultural industry. As President Johnson said in a 1965 Special Message to Congress on Agriculture, "The bounty of the earth is the foundation of our economy. Programs in every aspect of our nation's life depend on the abundant harvests of our farms." Nelson has long supported our nation's farmers through Farm Aid, established in 1985, which has raised over $70 million for those who own and operate family farms throughout the United States. He has also helped raise millions around disaster relief, for families of the victims of the 9/11 attacks and for veterans, as well as working toward environmental and animal advocacy, and voting rights.

CD review - The Border Willie Nelson has released more than 150 albums in his career, including four in the past two years. All this while approaching and surpassing the age of 90. Of all his many solo recordings, "The Border" ranks as one of his best. The songs are fresh, sincere, and full of energy and have many of the elements that fans expect from Ol' Willie - his unmistakable vocals, the trademark lead guitar work on his iconic axe, Trigger, and harmonica support from his 50-plus year bandmate, Mickey Raphael. ...
CD review - Bluegrass Willie Nelson has a winner. How could it not be? It features some of the greatest songs in music history and some of the finest bluegrass players in the business. Most of all, it centers around Willie Nelson, one of the most iconic artists in the history of music, who at 90, has given bluegrass treatment to some of his favorite musical creations. Songs on "Bluegrass" include some of his most recognized, including "Good Hearted Woman" (co-written with Waylon Jennings), "On ...
CD review - Don't Know A Thing About Love Who doesn't love and respect Willie Nelson? Willie, even at age 90, could sing the phone book – perhaps he has – and it would be worth hearing. Willie's latest is a tribute to the songwriting of Harlan Howard, the dean of country music songwriters, who passed away in 2002. Howard once described country music as "three chords and the truth." Howard wrote hundreds of country hits during his career. Nelson and producer Buddy Cannon picked 10 to showcase here, ...
