Buddy and Julie Miller are "In The Throes"

Wednesday, June 28, 2023 – Buddy and Julie Miller return with "In The Throes" on Sept. 22 via New West Records.

The 12-song set was produced by Buddy Miller and features Emmylou Harris, Regina McCrary, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, Gurf Morlix and Matt Slocum of Sixpence None the Richer.

"In The Throes" follows their 2019 "Breakdown on 20th Ave. South," which was their first album in a decade.

The new disc combines country, gospel, blues and R&B.

Julie Miller said, "I got deep into songwriting mode, and they just kept coming along." By his count she ended up with more than 100 songs — some of them fully written, others fragments. She wrote every song on the album with the exception of "Don't Make Her Cry," a co-write between Bob Dylan, Regina McCrary and Julie Miller.

McCrary started the song several years ago, then met with Dylan, who wrote, and rewrote more lyrics. When it came time to write the music, Dylan said to McCrary "give it to Buddy Miller." Buddy then passed it to Julie, who added more lyrics, moved others around and set it to music. Buddy took lead vocals on the song.

The title track is out today. Buddy said, "'In the Throes' deals with the toll taken on a relationship when one partner is constantly gone, on the road, working and preoccupied."

Buddy Miller has enjoyed a career as a solo artist, producer, session player with Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, John Fogerty, Solomon Burke, Frank Black of the Pixie and Steve Earle and producer. He also joined T Bone Burnett on the musical team working on the hit ABC-TV series Nashville, and following Burnett's departure, became the show's Executive Music Producer. Alongside Jim Lauderdale, Buddy is also the co-host of The Buddy & Jim Show on Outlaw Country, SiriusXM.

Julie Miller has been a with her debut out in 1990. Her songs have been recorded by Levon Helm, Little Jimmy Scott, Miranda Lambert, Dierks Bentley, Wynonna Judd, Lee Ann Womack, Dianna Krall, Burke, Harris and Ronstadt.

After more than 40 years of marriage, the Millers have recorded only four albums as a duo.. "Music is such a wonderful thing to have in a relationship," Buddy said. "That's how we met back in Austin in the mid 70s. We started playing together, and we've been playing together ever since. I love her writing and she tolerates my singing and playing. It's a lot of give and take, but it's such a joy."

The track list is:
1. You're My Thrill
2. In The Throes
3. Don't Make Her Cry
4. Niccolo
5. I Love You
6. The Last Bridge You Will Cross
7. The Painkillers Ain't Workin'
8. Tattooed Tear
9. I Been Around
10. I'll Never Live It Down
11. We're Leavin'
12. Oh Shout

CD reviews

CD review - In The Throes Buddy Miller and Julie Miller, that unusual Americana power couple, don't sound like they're particularly in the kind of throes suggested by this "In The Throes" album title. There's a lot of hope – especially gospel message hope – contained on the married couple's strong album. While Buddy Miller may now be the best-known member of the pair – for his fine guitar playing and production work – Julie Miller is also a strong songwriter, which ...
CD review - Breakdown on 20th Ave. South "Breakdown on 20th Ave. South is significant in a number of ways. For starters, it marks Julie Miller's return to making music after an absence of 10 years. For another, it finds her collaborating once again with her ever prolific husband Buddy Miller, a man who's spent the last several years plying his craft as a bandleader, producer and helmsman for other artists. The two frequently worked together in the past, but this marks their first collaborative project in a decade and the ...
CD review - Cayamo Sessions at Sea Buddy Miller has done a lot in the music business. He's been a Nashville session player, a record producer, the musical director for the frothy, but entertaining, "Nashville" TV show. He does a weekly satellite radio with the talented, but dyspeptic, Jim Lauderdale. For the last few years, Miller has been a featured artist on one of a proliferating series of mid-Winter music cruises. Miller goes on the Cayamo cruise, generally in late January. The "Cayamo Sessions At ...
