Carper returns with "Borned In Ya"

Wednesday, May 1, 2024 – Melissa Carper, one-third of the Wonder Women of Country, will go back to her solo roots with a disc out in July.

The Austin-based singer will be out with a single and video for "Lucky Five" on Friday. The album, "Borned In Ya," comes out July 19 via Mae Music/Thirty Tigers.

"Lucky Five" is a lighthearted track about past relationships. "I have much personal experience to draw from in writing a song that speaks of learning from past relationships, growing as a human and being able to know how to love better as you grow," said Carper.

"I believe that any difficult experience that presents itself is just an opportunity to learn and face something in ourselves that needs to be confronted, in order to learn."

The video, set in the Austin Roller Rink, was filmed and directed by Brian Schwarz of Painted House Productions.

Carper once heard an interview with the late Ralph Stanley about the sound of old time mountain music. He said, "I don't think you can get this sound unless it's borned in ya."

Carper wrote it down, wrote a song about it and then made it the title track of her new album. Carper previously released the albums "Daddy's Country Gold" and "Ramblin' Soul."

Carper is in Wonder Women of Country with Kelly Willis and Brennen Leigh.

CD review - Daddy's Country Gold Singer/songwriter and upright bassist Melissa Carper is the genuine article. Her style evokes greats like Kitty Wells, Billie Holiday and Loretta Lynn, as heard in the dozen tunes on "Daddy's Country Gold." The "daddy" is not her father, but in a way the title owes to him too. As a child, Carper acquired the nickname "Daddy" from her bandmates for always being in control of the music. After a spending time in her family's country band, Carper attended the ...
