The Grascals' Roberts drifts along

Friday, August 2, 2024 – For his latest Mountain Home Music Company single,

The Grascals' mandolinist Danny Roberts served up an original tune, "The Drifter," on Mountain Home.

"When I started writing 'The Drifter,'" Roberts said, "I was inspired to compose something to pay tribute to one of my all-time favorite mandolin players, David Grisman. I feel like this song has that vibe, though nobody can play that style like Dawg. The song title is in honor of my late brother-in-law, Mike Mullins, who wrote a book called 'The Drifter' before he passed away; that title just seemed to fit this song."

After Roberts' opening on mandolin, banjo, fiddle and guitar take turns in negotiating the tune's contrasting sections before Roberts returns to bring the group home in a crescendo.

"'The Drifter' was so much fun to record," he said. "It's always great to have my wife Andrea playing bass with, me and the solos that Tony Wray (banjo and guitar) and Jimmy Mattingly (fiddle) played on it are magical. I'm blessed to have such great musicians helping me bring my music to life."

He handles nearly half of the lead vocal responsibilities including, "Delia" and gospel tune ...
CD review - and then there's this... One of bluegrass music's strongest and most engaging performing groups, Nashville's The Grascals have consistently freshened traditional sounds with modern, progressive elements. Their Rounder albums were impressive with each an excellent introduction to the group. More recently, the band has occasionally faltered by producing music lacking distinction. Albums have been uneven in both song selection and execution. The Grascals have attempted to broaden their appeal in ways detrimental to ...
For the past decade or so, Danny Roberts has been well-known to bluegrass fans as the mandolin player for (and a founding member of) The Grascals, unquestionably one of the most successful bluegrass bands on the planet. That alone should establish his instrumental creds, and since he leaves the singing for the most part to his band mates, it would be a pretty good guess that his second solo effort, "Nighthawk" would be primarily an instrumental affair. Correct so far. ...
